Minutes of the 53rd Meeting of the
            Southwestern Low-Level Radioactive Waste Commission
May 16, 2008

Telephone Conference 

The 53rd meeting of the Southwestern Low-Level Radioactive Waste Commission was called to order by Chair Aubrey Godwin at 1:00 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time on May 16, 2008 via telephone conference.  Members participating: Aubrey Godwin, Arizona; Donna Earley, George Campbell and Kenneth Vadnais, and Alternate Peter Brierty, California; Joseph Nadenicek, South Dakota; and Dana Mount, North Dakota. Staff participating: Stephen Kowalewski, Counsel, and Don Womeldorf, Executive Director.

In response to the Chair’s request, Mr. Kowalewski stated that the agenda of the meeting had been sent to the Commissioners and interested parties, and posted on the Commission’s website, on May 5, 2008 in accordance with the California Open Meeting Act, Government Code section 11125.

Prior to the Commission’s closed session, Chair Godwin disclosed that the purpose of the closed session was to discuss the Commission’s response to a draft audit report received from the California Bureau of State Audits.  He noted that the closed session was authorized by Government Code section 11126.2.   

Following the closed session, in open meeting, Chair Godwin disclosed that the Commission had reviewed and amended a draft response to the Bureau of State Audits and had unanimously approved the amended version and directed it be sent to the Bureau of State Audits.

There were no public comments. 

Regarding future agenda items, it was suggested that the Bureau of State Audits report, which would be in final form before the next meeting, should be discussed.

The next meeting was set for October 16, 2008, at the Hyatt Hotel in Sacramento, California. 

Chair Godwin adjourned the meeting at 3:03 p.m.
